There are many benefits of hiring a freelancer online rather than getting a regular employee in the office. This explains why the online marketplaces have become the places of choice for business owners. Today, hiring online freelancers is no longer a domain of the small business only because even the big business organizations are doing it.

  1. The employer will have a large pool of freelancers to choose from. Thus, they will be in a position to pay what they can afford, rather than hiring from the conventional market where they would be limited for choice.
  2. As an employer, even if you hire a freelancer on the internet but from your own country, you will not be overly responsible for their record keeping and taxes. It is their duty to take care of their taxes. This means more time on your hands.
  3. Pay when you are happy with the work done! No one can overemphasize the importance of this. If a regular employee at the office under-delivers, you cannot just refuse to pay their wage, unless you are ready to face the unions.
  4. Believe it or not, online freelancers do a neater, better job than the regular employees. The freelancer knows that he/she has to beat the competition and therefore he does his best.
  5. It is easier to get the right man for the job in the online market places than in the local job market. First, there are many freelancing sites online. Secondly, thousands of freelancers sign up every day. There will be no shortage of labor supply.

Why Hiring Online Freelancers is Ideal for Small Business Owners

14 Jan

When the internet was invented, it hit the ground running and it has never stopped running to date. Instead, it has turned into a big source of income. It has also become a source of affordable labor and services essential to the growth of business. Freelancing, in almost every area of business, has become the order of the day. But just to get a snapshot into the background of freelancing, what is it, and just how did freelancing start?

The main objective of outsourcing was to give the small business owners a gateway to get affordable business support services. With the governments of the day setting stringent labor laws, it became very important to look for alternative sources of labor where business owners could get cheap services, and that is why the developing countries are handy for people looking for freelancers. This is due to a number of reasons, which can be summarized as below:

  1. The cost of living in the developing countries is low and therefore freelancers from such countries can work at a lower cost.
  2. The employers prefer outsourcing labor because they will not have to pay any additional benefits for health and retirement. The contract between the employer and the worker is only valid as long as both of them are in mutual agreement to work with or for each other.
  3. Online freelancing is a win-win situation for the employer and the freelancer. The freelancer gets an income and the employer pays cheaply for a service. In addition, the employer only pays when he/she is happy with the job done.

Let Your Hand Be With Me

14 Jan

And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

1 Chronicles 4:10 (King James Version (KJV))

A golf club in my hand is worth $200 but  in Tiger Wood’s hands it is worth a United States Open Championship and US$500 million a year. A stick in the palms of my hand will discipline my little son, but one in Aaron’s hands will heal a snake bite. A glass of water in my hand is just that, water; in Jesus’ hand its the best wine. Scars in my hand might represent a minor accident; On Jesus’ hand scars represent salvation for all mankind.

Up until now Jabez  had requested for 2 things:

  •  To be blessed indeed; and
  •  For his coast to be enlarged

Upon the realization of the magnitude of his blessing and extended territory, he prayed for God’s hand to be with him. To protect him and his territory.

As freelancers, when we seek God’s blessings in earnestness like Jabez did, he will surely bless us and enlarge our spheres of influence. However, as we seek God’s blessings, we must also seek Him in the blessings. Why? Because the value of something is defined by the hand that it’s in. Similarly, our worth as  freelancers depends on whose hands we’re in.

Today let all freelancers ask for God’s hand into their lives. It is only by His hand that we can perform in our newly expanded territories.

Dear Lord, teach us to know that thy hand is mighty, and that we may fear you forever. Amen

Freelancing Larger

And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

1 Chronicles 4:10 (King James Version (KJV))

Today is our second devotion in a 3-part series that’s based on a gentleman from the Old Testament book of Chronicles called Jabez. His name meant “Pain” but he chose not to live down to its meaning. He chose to live a life that was anything but painful; and instead, scripture memorializes him as one who was “more honorable than his brothers.”

As a result of living a life honorable in God’s sight, Jabez was able to offer a prayer requesting for four different things. And God answered them all. Today we look at the first two requests- “Oh, that You would bless me,  and enlarge my coast.”

This is a notably very selfless prayer. Jabez is asked God to bless him and then enlarge his territory; so that he can be a blessing to many more, witness to many more, and influence even many more. Jabez understood that his whole reason for existence is to be a blessing to God and to those around him. This is the kind of prayer freelancers should all be praying for everyday.  That God bless and enlarge our coasts so we can bless many more around us.

Unlike the full-time regular employees, freelancers get to deal with many different kinds of people from all walks of life, due to the nature of our jobs. This provides us lots of opportunity for witnessing. And am not talking of preaching sermons to every employer you engage with. Actions speak louder than words; and just doing a task with all our might like unto the Lord is a blessing that even the greatest sermon will never match.

Additionally, with a larger territory, comes greater financial blessings; as we enjoy them, let us remember to give back to His ministry in terms of our tithes and offerings.

Tomorrow, we shall look at the third request – “and that thine hand might be with me”

Dear Lord,  bless me and increase my freelancing territory so that I can have more influence and greater ability to be witness for you.

Turning Your Pain into Gain

12 Jan

Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, ‘Because I bore him in pain.- 1 Chronicles 4:9

Although most freelancers are in this career path out of their own choosing, many others are in it due to circumstances beyond them, some very unpleasant.

But their situation is not unique. Somewhere in the Old Testament book of 1 Chronicles 4. in the midst of a long list of hundreds of difficult to pronounce names that sound like a Hebrew telephone directory, suddenly the author takes a pause to introduce his readers to a guy named Jabez whose name means “pain”. He then proceeds to give his short bio in about 4 sentences before proceeding on with his genealogical list.

But what did Jabez do to stand out from the crowd? Scripture points out two distinctive characteristics:  First, is his distinct name which means pain; and second is his distinct character of honor.

In spite of of a rough start to life, Jabez still managed to transform himself from someone known to cause pain … to a man remembered for being “more honorable than his brethren”.  Not because he had more resources or things were better or easier for him. He became more honorable than those of resemblance because he had the right attitude and made better use of  what was available to him.

True honor is not in what an individual owns, but in the character of the individual who owns it. Jabez had the desire to be the best he could be in his circumstances.

Well, unlike Jabez who got his name from his difficult birth that experience had, I do not know the circumstances under which you  became a freelancer; or  temp, or outsourced worker; or disposable worker, as one doomsday article once called us; maybe it was as a result of a downsizing, or your need for independence, or the need for that extra cash; but whatever the reason is, it doesn’t matter.

And it doesn’t even matter what painful memories or bad reputation your current situation as a “freelancer” brings to you. What matters is what God says about you.

You can choose to live with the painful memories and the reputation that freelancing brings to you, or you can make a decision to live the way God determined for you. Although I freelance out of choice, I have chosen to be the freelancer of honor; and be the best God could possibly make of me. I choose to look for the gains and blessings in freelancing rather than the pains.

Why? because we are not what what we are surrounded by, but ultimately what God has planned for me us to be.…Jeremiah 29:11 says “I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a hope and a future.”

Just like Jabez, choose today to have the ambition and desire, and make the effort to use what you have to be the best that you can be.

This desire and ambition and personal effort will place you in a more honorable position than many of your peers. This will result in noble dealings with all around you including employers; and like Jabez, you will stand out from the crowd and get noticed.

This devotion and those of the next 2 days were mainly inspired by reading the book, The Prayer of Jabez, by Bruce Wilkenson. Tomorrow we will look at  what made Jabez more “honorable than his brethren”.

 Stay tuned.

Dear Lord, use my present circumstance as a freelancer to build in me a character that is honorable in thy sight. Amen

Valley Experiences in Our Freelancing Lives

11 Jan

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Psalms 23:4- King James Bible “Authorized Version”, Pure Cambridge Edition

In our freelancing careers, alongside the glorious mountains of freedom, flexibility, and fun jobs; deep shadows will get cast your way leading you to walk through many valleys – some professional others personal.

For example not knowing how to start out as a new freelancer; the feast – famine cycle; losing a long-term client; or facing criticisms from a client; Sometimes you will get stiffed on a job; other times you will get paid peanuts after giving your all; and for many more the employers may be too slow to pay, if they get to pay you at all.

Our personal lives too have valleys. The valley of sickness, or of death could delay that very urgent project. Or it could be the valley of political conflict in your country.

Yet in the midst of all these valleys, God will be in there with us… If we call on Him and trust Him.

He meets with us at our points of need, comforting us with his rod and staff.

PRAYER: Lord, as I walk through this valley in my freelancing career, visit with me and provide me the comfort I need to face tomorrow. Amen.
